While the world has transitioned to IP-based solutions for operational telecom, there’s still a need for keeping good old legacy in place. As organizations are continuously looking for ways to save money, they don’t necessarily want to invest money on telecommunication infrastructure, especially when it comes to migrating to a new technology just to be compatible with the other more modern parts of their IP-based infrastructure.
There are many mission critical service organizations that still rely on legacy T1/E1/analog lines for utility meter readings, Point-of-Sale (POS) and alarm systems. For example, power utility companies have meters deployed in the field across long distances, all connected over T1/E1 lines where they hook up to a central platform. In many retail stores, the POS device sends information to a back office via modem calls through a centralized platform.
So, if organizations were required to replace all these legacy devices and tear out all those legacy lines in place of fiber or Ethernet, just to keep up with the modernization of IP-based solutions, they would quickly experience financial issues. On top of that, there would be no extra benefit or features after making all these changes either. It’s a case of ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it’.
The good news is that Sangoma’s Diva Telephony Boards are a quick plug-in solution to all of this. They’re supported in most of these platforms and provide the same modem call functionality as the existing modem solutions already deployed.
