Open source telecommunications enter mobile cloud market

The cloud computing world is evolving and expanding, moving toward communication technologies in addition to improving infrastructure processes. In fact, as more consumers adopt smartphones, tablets and other devices, the mobile cloud communications trend is taking shape, according to a FierceBroadbandWireless report by research firm Maravedis.

However, operators are having trouble defining which genre of the cloud they fall under. Nevertheless, telecoms are focusing on utilizing unique industry capabilities that other major public cloud providers like Google and Amazon don't have, the report said. As a result, more providers are offering open source telecommunication technologies, rather than traditional services.

It will be interesting to see how this trend plays out in 2012, especially as 4G capabilities enter the mix. Still, the large enterprises will most likely control the cloud market, but it will be the telecoms that are known for guaranteeing secure services, according to Maravedis.

According to Insight Research, the advancements in open source software will greatly impact telecommunication providers and the way they deploy, manage and host new services. These habits will carry on through 2016 and beyond.
