Open source telephony becomes more popular

Traditionally, the world of IT has been built primarily on proprietary software solutions constructed by some of the titans of the industry, such as IBM and Microsoft. Times are changing, however, and the presence of open source software is becoming more prevalent, ITworld said in a report.

"A lot of software innovation today is being driven by organizations that aren't in the business of selling software, which means that a great deal of it is open source," said Redmonk analyst Stephen O'Grady, according to ITworld. "Proprietary software's role as the primary innovator in the market is, effectively, over."

Open source innovations are typically aimed at solving concerns and problems that businesses have on the web, O'Grady said, and are essentially pushing proprietary software off to the side. The software world used to be pretty well defined in terms of distinguishing which solutions or products were open source, but as more vendors embrace the changing times, that line gets more blurred every day, the news source noted.

Open source software is widely available to the public. As a result, according to a Cynapse report, more developers and analyzers are able to access the solutions and make them more secure and safe. This may be one reason so many organizations are turning to open source.
