Asterisk 10 to be released
Tuesday, November 01, 2011 at 11:20:06 am
Businesses may be excited to hear that Asterisk 10, the latest version of the open source telecommunication software, is coming to the marketplace. The new platform focuses primarily on the solution's media engine, said Steve Sokol, the marketing director of Asterisk, according to CRN.
"The new version is actually capable of negotiating the specific details of media," Sokol explained to the news source. "That's the biggest thing: a rip-and-replace of the media engine so that it's now capable of doing any kind of media or any video at almost any quality rate."
Another addition is the conferencing application, called ConfBridge, which will replace the existing MeetMe system. Now, regardless of the operating system, ConfBridge will support a full range of codecs and enable detailed customization from developers. The new platform will also have better fax capabilities and add text message routing to its available functions, CRN reported.
According to Eastern Management Group, global PBX revenue surpassed $59 billion in 2010. This was mainly because companies were looking to improve efficiency. By using Asterisk, companies can benefit from using an open source platform to do so while still being able to integrate multiple solutions.
